What is Environmental Lab Testing?

Environmental microbiology testing and monitoring ensures safety and quality by assessing microbial contamination levels in manufacturing environments and packaging. By employing methods compliant with ISO 18593 and CLAS scope, our environmental lab provides comprehensive testing services, including swab tests for bacteria, yeasts, and moulds, as well as specific microorganisms like Enterobacteriaceae, Coliforms/E coli, Pseudomonas spp, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Environmental Microbiology Testing

Manufacturing under hygienic conditions is essential to avoid microbiological problems and ensure that products consistently meet required quality standards. We offer the following testing to support routine plant hygiene monitoring and the investigation of microbiological issues. Our in-house environmental lab testing methods based on ISO 18593 covered by our CLAS scope.

Swab testing for bacteria, yeasts and moulds

Swab testing for specific micro-organisms, e.g.
  • Enterobacteriaceae
  • Coliforms/E coli
  • Pseudomonas spp
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Presumptive Salmonella spp
  • Presumptive Listeria
Hand and clothing swabs
Exposure plates for air monitoring
  • This will consist of sending you sets of pre-poured plates - 2 per location: 1 plate for bacteria and 1 plate for yeast & moulds.
  • These plates will need to be exposed for 60 minutes then returned to us for reading and interpretation.
  • We apply pharmaceutical Class D limits for non-sterile manufacture or, we can apply any specification you require.

Our environmental lab services include basic characterisation, contaminant identification, monitoring advice, result interpretation, and on-site assistance. We offer practical support for testing and plant hygiene monitoring programs, providing swabs for hard surface selection and plates for air sampling as needed.

How we can support your testing and plant hygiene monitoring programmes:

  • Basic characterisation of predominant recovery at no additional charge.
  • Full identification of predominant contaminants, if required.
  • Advice on monitoring regimes and cleaning/sanitisation procedures.
  • Help with interpreting the significance of results and suggesting appropriate corrective action.
  • On-site assistance with contamination problems.
  • Provision of swabs for hard surface sampling and plates for air sampling, if required.

Product and packaging failures:

  • Mouldy packaging - investigation.
  • Mould prevention trials.
  • Suspected mould contamination during manufacturing.

Monitoring the Environment

At Donnington we understand the critical role microorganisms play in our environment. Environmental microbiology testing provides valuable insights into the presence and activity of microbes in air, water, and various pieces of equipment and surfaces. This knowledge is essential for safeguarding public health, ensuring product safety, and maintaining GMP.

What is Environmental Microbiology Testing?

Environmental microbiology testing utilises techniques to identify, quantify, and assess microorganisms within environmental samples. These tests can help us detect harmful pathogens, spoilage organisms and evaluate the overall microbial levels.

This can take place on samples from Deionised water plants, factory, manufacturing vessels, filling machines and even outside spaces including lakes.

We can help you set up sampling schedules along with monitoring for trends. Covering air monitoring, surface swabbing and hand swabbing.
